Kookaburras crush Canada in Olympic opener

Youngster Des Abbot scored three goals on his Olympic debut as Australia's men's hockey team cruised through its opening group match against Canada on Monday evening.

The Kookaburras had no difficulties recording a 6-1 victory, even with captain Bevan George and talisman Jamie Dwyer making early exits through injury.

Canada managed its sole goal in the 38th minute.

The match was marred by a minor scuffle minutes from the finish when two players collided close to the sideline, sending the Canadian sprawling to the turf.
